Eight firms to take part in 2G spectrum auction

Eight telecom service providers will take part in the second generation (2G) spectrum auction due Feb 3, 2014, Telecom Secretary M.F. Farooqui Wednesday said.

The companies are Reliance Communications, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Telewings, Aircel, Tata Teleservices and Idea Cellular. 

"We have received eight applications for spectrum auction. It will be a success. We expect a positive outcome from spectrum sale," Farooqui told reporters here.

He said the government hopes to exceed Rs.11,343 crore realisation from the auction.

Wednesday was the last date for submission of applications to bid in the auction. 

The total spectrum to be put on auction is 46 MHz in 900 MHz band and 403.2 MHz in 1,800 MHz band.

The government expects to mop up Rs.40,874.50 crore from this spectrum auction.
