CASTING : RANDEEP HOODA, ALIA BHATT

SYNOPSIS:

Mahavir Bhati (Randeep Hooda) kidnaps Veera Tripathi (Alia Bhatt) who is the daughter of rich and powerful businessman M.K Tripathi.

Mahavir and his gang keep changing their location from one city to another with Veera to hide from police. One fine day Mahavir decides to drop Veera to her family but Veera doesn’t returns to her family and comes back to Mahavir as she has fallen in love with him. What’s next? Do Mahavir accept Veera’s love? What they both do for their survival? This is the rest of the story.

STORY, SCREENPLAY AND DIALOGUES:

Story written by Imtiaz Ali is just one liner, that a gang kidnaps a girl. There is no twist or excitement in the narrative. In the first half they keep changing places to hide from the police, but police is shown only in the climax. Veera is shown as a daughter of a powerful businessman, but no action has been shown taken by the father to trace her daughter, until the climax. Also why Mahavir gets so emotional, starts missing and cries for her mother after meeting Veera, is totally confusing. Justification given in the end for Veera’s unnatural behavior and hunt for freedom is child abuse of her, in her house, this looks very childish. Yes there is well characterization done for all the characters, they are believable and somehow hold the attention of the audience.

PERFORMANCES:

Performance wise Randeep Hooda is at his best and has done a marvelous job, he is in his character throughout the movie, well done Randeep. It’s the 2nd film of Alia Bhatt, after her glamorous debut in ‘Student of the Year’ and the actress has done a very good job. In fact one needs courage to accept such non glamorous character as she has projected herself in a very glamorous role previously. Other cast provides good support to the movie.

DIRECTION, CINEMATOGRAPHY AND EDITING:

Director Imtiaz Ali is excellent and there is no second thought about it, he has taken out good performances from all the artists, but he should have added some entertainment in the narration which is lacking. Cinematography by Anil Mehta is top notch, he has beautifully captured the hill station and the highways. Editing by Aarti Bajaj is very sharp and crisp.

ACTION, BACKGROUND SCORE AND MUSIC:

Musically A.R.Rahman has given a decent album, but not as per the expectations. Background score is fine.

CHOREOGRAPHY, LOCATIONS AND PRODUCTION VALUE:

Locations are beautiful and eye pleasing. Production values are of a decent standard.

OUR VERDICT:

Overall, the film has taken a good opening because of Imtiaz Ali and Alia Bhatt who is coming back with her 2nd film. The film will do well at the multiplexes, but would not do any wonders in single screens and small centre’s. As the film is made on a reasonable budget, so it won’t be difficult to recover its cost, but surely not a hit.
