7 points to note in the October elections...

October 20, 2014 09:19 PM

In every Assembly election since Independence in Maharashtra, the Congress has emerged either as the largest party or been a close second.

In 1978 the Janata Party may have been the largest party with 99 seats, but combining the two Congress factions, they had 131 seats.

This is the first time ever that they are a distant third and about one-third of the main party. The Congress has ruled Maharashtra for 60/67 years and they have been totally out of the picture only from 1995-99.

In all other States, they are in and out of power.

Maharashtra was their last bastion. It has fallen.

2. Dynasties firmly on the decline…

Whether it was the Gandhis or the Chautalas or the Pawars or the Thackerays, absolutely nobody has been able to even touch the appeal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The trend that was started in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and it continues.
