Revealed: 5 striking similarities between Sidharth Malhotra’s Ek Villain and Varun Dhawan’s Badlapur!

December 04, 2014 08:34 AM

After watching the impressive teaser of Sriram Raghavan’s latest twisted thriller, I was taken over by the feeling of deja vu as I  coaxed myself that I was not watching Ek Villain all over again. Read on to find out why Varun’s Badlapur reminded me of Sidharth’s Ek Villain

Sidharth Malhotra in Ek Villain,” Main tujhe marne nahi doonga, lekin main tujhe roz maaroonga … ek baar nahi hazar baar maaroonga.” Now hear this dialogue by Varun Dhawan from Badlapur,” Log kehte hain apne dushman ko maaf kar dena chahiye. Main bhi yahi manta hun…lekin unhe tadpa tadpa ke marne ke baad.” Can you spot the difference? Or are you dumbstruck like me at how familiar the two dialogues sound. The similarities between Sidharth’s Ek Villain and Varun’sBadlapur doesn’t end here. From dialogues, to assault weapons to the basic plot, everything in Badlapur teaser reminded me of Mohit Suri’s blatant copy of I Saw The Devil.

While the B-town is going gaga over teaser of  Varun Dhawan‘s latest flick, I give you 5 reasons why I found Badlapur strikingly similar to Ek Villain:

Angry young man look

Not just the fact that Varun and Sidharth had experimented with their looks by sporting a stubble in Badlapur and Ek Villain respectively, even the body language of Varun has close resemblance to the intense portrayal by Sidharth in Ek Villain. The anger in bloodshot eyes, the brooding demeanour, we have seen all that in Ek Villain itself Varun!

Revenge saga

While it is early to comment on what’s Badlapur all about, the teaser suggests that it is a revenge saga. It looks like one man’s mission to destroy the other, seeking revenge for his wife and kid. Do even have to remind you that Ek Villain was about Sidharth’s revenge for the death of his wife? I just couldn’t overlook the similarity between the basic plot of two films.

Hero with grey shades/ Violence

Varun is seen playing a forty year old in Badlapur who goes on a killing spree seeking revenge. And if you thought  that Varun has tried something unique by playing a grey character, think again. Sidharth had already played a gangster turned good guy role in Ek Villain, showing off his violent streak.

Assault weapons – Screw Driver vs Hammer

It is pretty clear from the Badlapur teaser that hammer is the favourite assault weapon for Varun  Dhawan’s Raghu. Though the actor looked deadly killing with the hammer in cold blood, it reminded me of a certain gentleman with a screwdriver. Yes, I am talking about Riteish Deshmukh from Ek Villain. Of we compare the two films, it is quite evident that violence is the main theme of the film with just a slight change in the assault weapon.

Dialogue and it’s implied meaning

As mentioned above, Varun’s dialogue in Badlapur teaser sounds interestingly familiar to Sidharth’s famous line from Ek Villain. I find it hard to digest that both the dialogues imply about taking revenge in “tadpa tadpa ke” style.

While I am not saying that Badlapur is a copy of Ek Villain, or Varun is aping Sidharth, but as a viewer how can I not be baffled with the striking similarities between the two flicks. Guess we will have to wait and watch how Varun Dhawan’s Badlapur unfolds from now on.
