Essential winter skincare tips

January 12, 2015 05:03 PM

Skincare regimes and products have to be season specific. Just like you need clothes with higher insulation to keep you warm in winter, your skin, too, needs extra protection. Lightweight moisturisers must be replaced with more heavy duty stuff. Dipping temperatures, reduced humidity and high UV levels demand a little extra time and effort.

Exfoliation
Are we out of our mind to tell you to exfoliate in winters, you may ask? Since you will be slapping on some heavy duty moisturiser, it’s a good idea to exfoliate your skin at least once a week. Even though skin cell production slows down when it gets colder, you must exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and dirt. Failing to exfoliate will clog your pores leading to irritated and oily skin. Also, it is imperative you exfoliate to get a closer shave and avoid ingrown hairs.

Moisturise

Humidity levels drop and your skin needs extra hydration and nourishment. Dry skin ages faster. Also, you could look tired and haggard all the time. Using a good quality moisturiser will help keep your skin plump and supple. A little goes a long way, don’t apply more moisturiser than is necessary, but moisturise often.

Sun Protection
There’s no skipping the sunscreen even when you barely feel the sunrays. The sun’s UV rays penetrate even on the darkest, gloomiest, greyest days. You need to slap on sunscreen in winters like you do through the year especially if you live in a place where it snows.

Lip Love
Mock us now and suffer later. It is sheer torture to eat, talk and smile through dry, cracked, chapped lips. Prevention is truly better than cure. Do your lips some service and apply a clear chapstick with zero-shine. Invest in a lip balm or chapstick with SPF. Your lips need sun protection too.

Eyes

The skin around your eyes is the thinnest and most delicate. You will need an intensive-care eye cream to treat your eye region. Penny pinching will not do you any good. Agreed, the price of eye creams can make your eyes water, but that little vial will see you through the season.

For The Rest of You
Although not as sensitive as your face, you will notice that your limbs particularly elbows and knees getting drier and harder. Make sure you use a body lotion after your daily shower.
