I was quite impressed by Sajid-Wajid when they shelled out numbers like Superman,Joganiyan and Let’s Celebrate for Arjun Kapoor- Sonakshi Sinha’s Tevar. Obviously, my expectations were high from the music composers for Sonam Kapoor’s Dolly Ki Doli as well. After listening to all the tracks, however, I’m left disappointed with the mediocrity put forth by the duo. Here is my review of the film’s album:Phatte Tak Nachna

The album starts with Sunidhi Chauhan’s Phatte Tak Nachna. The track is backed by high voltage dhol beats infused with electro ones. As I heard the number, I got the sense that I was amidst a barat, en route to a dhamkedaar wedding. Thumbs up to Sajid Wajid for successfully encompassing the ‘shaadi’ feel in the song. However, the tune of it could have been much more appealing. It lacks consistency and isn’t catchy enough. Further, the track consists of too many background sounds with a choir going “hoye hoye,” backed by a set composition of piano tunes and heavy beats. All in all, the track is confusing and noisy. Sunidhi Chauhan’s singing is predictable and she brings nothing new to the table. The lyrics are nothing we haven’t heard before either. A blah number, to sum it up.

Fashion Khatam Mujhpe

When I heard this number by Mamta Sharma, I was instantly reminded of Munni Badnam andFevicol. Where is the originality Sajid-Wajid? Same set of tabla beats, mixed with the drab tune of shehnai and a rap section in the middle to make it an entertaining listen. Well, instead it turned out to be monotonous and overdone. I believe the music duo is under the impression that whatever they shell out in the name of an ‘item number’ would be a hit. The lyrics of the number are yet again senseless and consists of lines similar to ‘mein toh tandoori murgi hoon yaar, ghatkale saiyan alchohol se.’ One such example from Fashion Mujhpe Khatam is the line ‘440 mujh mein current, jhatka maare back aur front.’ Need I write anything more?

Babjai Ka Thullu

The only appealing segment from the track is when it breaks into a set of swanky trance beats at the chorus ‘Babaji Ka Thullu.’ I like the fact that Sajid-Wajid experimented with this number, giving it a slow pace in the begging and adding fast beats at the chorus where the track picks up. The tune, however, is unimpressive yet again, and Wajid’s flat voice does nothing to make it better. The rap section by Danish Sabri in the song comes across as an attempt to copy Yo Yo Honey Singh. Babji Ka Thullu was supposed to be a funky audio presentation but fails to hit the mark owing to its uninteresting composition.

Dolly Ki Doli

The initial bit of this title track got me hooked. With a strumming segment on the electric guitar backed by the faint tune of shahnai in the background, this number has an appealing start. As it progressed, my expectations were lowered. I was ready to be blown away by a happening chorus but instead was irked to hit the forward button. The number lacks consistency, getting caught up in a fusion of tabla beats and a hard hitting base. The sole appealing element of the number is Divya Kumar’singing, which is energetic and pleasant to the ears. In my opinion, this song could have been the best one in the album had it been made with some simplicity.

Mere Naina Kafir Hogaye

This is the best and the only captivating track from the album. A soulful number backed by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s enchanting voice, Mere naina kafir hogaye is a pleasant and breezy listen. The tune of the song kept me intrigued followed by heartwarming lyrics which make the number meaningful and worth appreciation. This song truly proves that Sajid Wajid have immense talent which needs a bit of revival, polish and revolution!

Verdict: If you wish to tickle your sentimental buds, go ahead and listen to Mere naina kafir hogaye. Fashion khatam mujhpe is worth a listen only if you are in the mood to shake a leg or two. Apart from these two numbers, you can give this album a miss!
