March 04, 2015 09:59 AM

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said if there is anything against farmers in the land acquisition act amended by the government, it will be changed.

The prime minister however firmly said the law will continue to be in place.

"Members have expressed concern over land acquisition bill. I assure you...if there is anything against farmers, I have said it since day one we are ready to make changes," Modi said.

He said land is needed for irrigation schemes, rural housing and roads.

He also said several states had expressed concern over the act amended by the former UPA government.

"This law has tried to address state concerns," Modi said.

He added "the law will remain, we have to remove shortcomings"
