Statement from the Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of Employment and Social Development and Regional Minister

March 23, 2015 02:59 PM

There is nothing more inspiring than people determined to work hard and contribute despite the obstacles life puts in their way. Such is the case for 50 extraordinary Canadians who have sorted and shredded sensitive government documents for over three decades. This work must be done and they do it well.

When I learned that their contract was winding down, I immediately pulled all those involved together to find a solution that would keep these great Canadians working. We have found that solution.

Today, I am pleased to announce that Public Works and Government Services Canada, on behalf of Employment and Social Development Canada, is establishing a new three-year contract with the option of renewal so that the group can continue sorting and shredding documents for departments across the Government.

They will work in the same facility and do the same tasks as before. This contract will continue for years to come with the same arrangement that was previously in place with Library and Archives Canada.  Officials have worked hard to already identify two departments that will use the group’s service. Other departments may be added and there will be plenty of paper to manage. The work will continue to have real value.

Work gives these 50 great Canadians pride, purpose and a place to go and belong every day. We should be thankful to have them as part of the Canadian family."

- The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of Employment and Social Development

“We’re are very pleased with the solution achieved by the Government of Canada and appreciate Minister Poilievre’s personal commitment to this matter. This support will allow us to continue our work of assisting these individuals in developing work and life skills and allowing them to meaningfully contribute to their community.”

- Dave Ferguson, Executive Director, Ottawa-Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities
