Minister Nicholson Statement on Boris Nemtsov Memorial Service

March 04, 2015 08:44 AM

The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement after the memorial service for Boris Nemtsov, leading Russian opposition politician and former deputy prime minister:

"Those responsible for Boris Nemtsov’s murder on February 27 must be held to account. Canada urges a swift, transparent and independent investigation.

"The thousands of Russians who marched on Sunday to pay tribute to Mr. Nemtsov also recalled the original purpose of this march, which he had helped organize. They said that they were unafraid, as he had been unafraid, in his criticism of the Kremlin’s policies.

"We know this act of violence will only strengthen the resolve of those who oppose Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and illegal annexation of Crimea. On behalf of all Canadians, I extend my profound condolences to Mr. Nemtsov’s family, friends and associates."
