The apex court of the country recently rules that if an unmarried couple are living together, they will be considered married in the eyes of law…

The Supreme Court recently ruled that unmarried couple who are living in together will be considered married in the eyes of law! The leading daily Times of India had reported that, “A bench of Justice MY Eqbal and Justice Amitava Roy said continuous cohabitation of a couple would raise the presumption of valid marriage and it would be for the opposite party to prove that they were not legally married.”

The one couple from Bollywood this new SC ruling will affect are Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. The Jagga Jasoos actors have been living in together at their Bandra love-nest and while the speculations about them getting married soon is doing the rounds, according to the SC ruling they are considered to be married already!

About unmarried couples living together, here is what the bench was quoted saying by TOI, “It is well settled that the law presumes in favour of marriage and against concubinage, when a man and woman have cohabited continuously for a long time. However, the presumption can be rebutted by leading unimpeachable evidence. A heavy burden lies on a party who seeks to deprive the relationship of legal origin.”

This new ruling can be counted as yet another addition to the book of regressive laws and practices in our country in the name of “Indian culture”. We aren’t sure yet if RK and Kat are aware of this new ruling but we wonder if they will be worried or amused by the same.
